The Edwin Markham papers are composed primarily of correspondence of the Markham family to Corneilus Greenway. Some poetry written by Markham's wife, Anna, is also included in the collection.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
